1913 - ROYAL MILITARY COLLEGE DUNTROON
(less than 2 years after opening)- Bastardisation of new officer cadets - "The human sacrifice was frog-marched stark naked by two stalwart seniors...A mixture of tar and treacle was painted on him from head to foot,after which a bag of flour was emptied over him,squirted with the stream from a two-inch fire hose..was carried out with the full knowledge and tacit acquiescence of several of the officers

1914 - TORRENS ISLAND P.O.W CAMP S.A
At a time when approximately 10 per cent of South Australia’s population was of German descent, the Torrens Island Concentration Camp was created to imprison those who were seen to be a threat to the nation. In his diary, Mr Bungardy wrote of prisoners being prodded, occasionally stabbed with bayonets, and regularly hearing warning shots fired over their heads. The two were reportedly tied to trees and flogged 20 times each with a cat-of-nine-tails. Mr Bungardy also wrote of a prisoner being stabbed several times and another shot in the leg.

1948-82 - BALCOMBE - ARMY APPRENTICE SCHOOL
Evidence to the commission about their experiences of "severe" sexual abuse, including fondling of genitals, forced masturbation and anal penetration with an object, such as a broomstick. The abuse was perpetrated by senior apprentices and, in some cases, staff members.Juniors were also subjected to "bastardisation" — such as being made to "run the gauntlet" during which they were punched and kicked.

1951 - RAN CRIB POINT RAPE
A MAN who was raped and tortured after he joined the Navy as a 13-year-old boy has begged the government to avoid exposing thousands of abuse victims to a gruelling Royal Commission. John Atkins was systematically abused from when he joined the Royal Australian Navy as a cadet at Crib Point in Victoria in 1951.

Xxx Xxxx, now 68, told The West Australian how he had been gang raped by a group of older cadets at HMAS Leeuwin at the age of 16 in 1965.

He wrote letters home, begging for his mother to get him out of HMAS Leeuwin naval base..he wrote that ‘‘he could not go on living’’..ran away, across the Nullarbor, only to be caught and returned to the base and dishonourably discharged.

Bob Green is a survivor of abuse, and has spoken up about the culture of fear and bullying at HMAS Leeuwin. One junior recruit who joined the navy in 1963 was attacked in the toilets, pushed to the ground, gagged with human faeces wrapped in paper, urinated upon and sodomised with a mop handle.Older recruits dished out regular beatings.

1965 - NAVY ABUSE SURVIVOR TELLS
A SUNSHINE Coast man still lives with the scars of his tormented past after he was exposed to “gross mistreatment” during 12 months as a recruit at the Australian naval base HMAS Leeuwin. - A man has detailed how he tried to end his own life after being raped repeatedly as a Navy apprentice in Sydney.He was frequently raped by two men in the early 1970s,sometimes as often as once a week, leaving him with injuries to his backside.

A promising young musician who was abused when he was a 15-year-old army apprentice says he had to work alongside his tormentors until he was medically discharged....rifle bayonet being unsheathed and the scabbard was pressed against him..He was stripped and painfully assaulted...too scared to report it

1973 - HMAS NIRIMBA - PAEDOPHILE CHAPLAINS
Pritchard trial 1993 Convicted of four charges of acts of indecency on a naval cadet while he was serving as naval chaplain at HMAS Nirimba at Quakers Hill. Pritchard trial 1997 Pleaded guilty to sexually abusing 6 teenagers and a 21-year-old man who were considering vocations between 1973 and 1992 Sweeney pleaded guilty to indecent assault on 18 year-old naval apprentice.

I STILL have nightmares about January 16, 1973, the first day I entered the Duntroon cadets' mess...The "fresh meat", the new intake of first-year cadets...Every fourth class, without distinction, suffered bastardisation...psychological and verbal degradation and intimidation. 1975 - AIR CADET LEADER SEXUALLY ABUSING MALE CADETS
A MARTIAL arts instructor and former air cadets leader has been jailed for four years after being convicted of sexually abusing four teenage boys in the 1970s.He was a member of the RAAF reserves until 1978.The court heard the boys, aged 13 to 15 years, were systematically corrupted for Wickson's sexual gratification – which included offences of touching, oral sex, masturbation and indecent photography.

As a senior cadet at Duntroon in 1983, xxxxxx was one of a group that allegedly ordered junior cadets to stand to attention and salute to commemorate Hitler becoming Germany's Chancellor on January 30, 1933. When one defiant junior cadet refused to stand at attention in honour of Nazis, Mr xxxxxx allegedly let other senior cadets to abuse and punish him.

1987 - DUNTROON CADET RELATES
I resigned in disgust five months in after being betrayed by my assigned mentor, a serving Captain.But the crap at Duntroon was not worth it. I lost respect for the training, the NCO's, the officers, the commanders, the Army. One of the cadets in Kakoda Company that was assigned to my section was Julian Knight. But Julian was abused from his early training. I believe because his immaturity and them misreading his keeness made him a target of the bullying culture at Duntroon. More than most cadets, he was ridiculed, harassed, persecuted, tormented and ostracised by the more senior cadets, and especially by the big and bulky Kakoda Company head cadet sergeant.

1989 - ADFA - 'CULTURE OF ABUSE 20 YEARS OLD'
I was about to lose my innocence at the hands of the Australian Defence Force.What followed was a descent into a world of bullying and harassment that few outside the defence forces can imagine....physical, sexual and psychological abuse I was subjected to...Shortly after I was attacked, the same gang attacked and gang-raped a female cadet in my division.No one was charged and nothing was done about it. One of the perpetrators said openly that "she was a drunk slut, she had it coming". That person is now a senior officer in the ADF.

1990 - HMAS ALBATROSS - DEFENCE ABUSE VICTIM SPEAKS OUT
A former sailor from HMAS Albatross in Nowra who says she was gang raped two decades ago, is urging other victims to put forward their submission to a national inquiry looking into abuse in the defence forces.

1992 - HMAS SWAN - SEXUAL HARASSMENT
Sexual harassment, HMAS Swan – August 1992 Two years after women were integrated into the Australian armed forces, a female medic made serious allegations of sexually assault by a male officer. He was court-martialled and acquitted, but soon two other women came forward with claims of harassment and discrimination. There was a public outcry.Amid heated debate, the ADF launched an inquiry. 1998 - ADFA - GREY REVIEW
The Grey Review uncovered high levels of sexual abuse, harassment, bullying and assault at the academy and a toxic culture of silence, tolerance and inaction among cadets and staff.
These damning findings should have been enough to shock the Australian Defence Force into action.
Certainly changes were made but as the Defence Abuse Response Taskforce reported just last week, none had any lasting effect.
Instead, the taskforce uncovered a sick and broken system, one with an ingrained culture of institutionalised cruelty that has been allowed to flourish unabated for decades.

1998 - ARMY MAJOR FOUND GUILTY OF TORTURE
Army major found guilty of ill-treating an inferior.The Court found that in 1998, while on duty in Malaysia, Major Xxxxx engaged in acts of bastardisation - that included tying up and blindfolding a junior officer, and subjecting his victim to some 15 hours of interrogation.

2000 - NAVY DRAGGED FEET ON BULLYING CLAIMS
A navy lieutenant, Ms Wiggins says as a cadet she was groped by her instructor, who twice tried to break into her cabin.
That was in 2000, when a powerful ally, HMAS Stirling's executive officer, Lieutenant Commander Robyn Fahy, took up the case. Ms Fahy was subsequently removed from her post on the basis of a medical report damning her mental health.

10/04/2004 - DEATH BEHIND THE LINES
The body of John Satatas was found with a rope around his neck barely 50metres from the accommodation block where he lived at Holsworthy army barracks, west of Sydney. When found, he had the words "Spic" and "Spiros" inscribed on his face in what appeared to be felt-tip pen. The outline of a beard and moustache was also drawn on his face. Unofficially, his death was said to be suicide, but the army has yet to release findings from its internal board of inquiry.

Over 1000 serving and former soldiers from the Royal Australian Regiment have been busted for partaking in an offensive closed Facebook site which features consistent comments and images denigrating women, Muslims and other targets.Lowlights of the posts include pictures of drunk women passed out with the comments: “She looks a little used to me.”; “Which woman isn't.” Women are variously described as "filthy, lying whores" while Muslims are referred to as “ragheads’ that “should be shot”.

ANOTHER sex scandal has rocked the ADF, with a 23-year-old soldier yesterday arrested over the alleged rape of a 21-year-old woman at the army's elite Royal Military College, at Duntroon in Canberra.The man was known to the woman and allegedly entered her residence within the grounds of the elite officer training college before 2am and sexually assaulted her before fleeing, police said.He was found by detectives and military police about 5am and taken to the ACT watch house. At 2pm he was formally charged with two counts of sexual intercourse without consent.

VICTIMS of a Facebook hate page that exposed and threatened gay members of the Australian military have launched legal action over the army's handling of the scandal.Former soldier....created the page to expose serving and past members of the ADF for being ''bum bandits''. The page had links to violent and pornographic YouTube video clips showing homosexuals being executed.

I don’t remember being an instigator, but I was most certainly a co-conspirator. It was pack mentality and I regret the behaviour. I look at it now and I can’t reconcile the behaviour of me and people around me.On reflection, if I couldn’t tolerate it myself, why did I let it be done to others? . I look at what was happening, some of those horrific acts, slowly watered down over time, but still horrific acts.

But at the end of his four years he still had no qualification. He alleges the recruitment process was dishonest and the Navy strung him along with more empty promises.
